skinny buildings…

Every year when I go through Cincinnati I wonder about the ‘skinny buildings’…I’ve done some research trying to find out why the tall thin buildings?  What I found was reference to their historical aspect but nothing with detailed information about this particular architecture preference.   I’m going to assume when these buildings were built the roads were narrow,  with possibly a large influx of settlers, with space being limited?   If anyone knows the reason please leave a message…fyi…photo taken while driving, not me of course!

  1. They are pretty thin. There are similar around London. Perhaps the length of road frontage had a cost attached..

      • very interesting…I see some of the “shotgun” houses in Key West, lovely little gingerbread type homes, and I’ve wondered about them. Now I know. I noticed there wasn’t any reference to homes in Cincinnati? Possibly due the fact the buildings in Cincinnati look a bit different than these house as most are multi story, either a single dwelling or multi dwellings. Thanks for looking…I’ve done some research but never came across the name “Shotgun” houses before…

      • Google shotgun house cincinnati. Some references there. Also railroad apartment. These had an internal passage linking the rooms..

      • I googled and there are also photos of the style I see when I go through Cincinnati…the drive is takes on an interstate highway that goes directly through the city and the houses are similar to the ones I posted. I guess they lumped them all together with the narrow idea and the interior design being similar, with various external designs. Thank you, now I can at least research the proper name…skinny didn’t work! 😉

    • yes, some even skinnier but this was the best photo to post(I was in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle)…I’ll keep researching to see if I can find out why they were built so skinny back then.
