Fog area…

On the drive to Florida we always discuss the “Fog Area”, which is near Calhoun, TN.  Fog is common in this area due to the combination of mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes.  The Fog Area is approximately 19 miles of fog lights, 8 fog detectors, 22 speed detectors and gates on the on/off ramps.  The reason for the lights, detectors, etc., is because Dec. 11th, 1990 there was a 99 car pile up due to fog…12 people died and 42 people were injured.   The accident happened due to fog that drifts over I75 north and south, generally early morning.  I75 goes over the Hiwassee River, which is part of the reason for the fog…this is where the worst fog occurs.  It is always under observation and when dense fog occurs this area is closed and vehicles are rerouted until the fog has dissipated, but those who are caught in this area when the fog is present are given the following instructions when driving through: follow the speed limit, do not slow down, do not stop!

We have driven to Florida eight or nine times, so total of 16/18 times driving through this area, and have always been fortunate to go through later in the day, without fog.

On the way home from Florida this year we drove through that area around 9:00am and experienced light fog.  As we drove over the Hiwassee River I looked to my right and saw what looked like a solid white, wall of nothing, it was so close I could almost reach out the window and touch it.   I realized we were fortunate to go past the river when we did or we would have been engulfed in the dense fog…

This is a photo I took driving through the area(I wasn’t driving).  We were almost through the fog area…I was watching the fog so it took me awhile to realize I should take a photo…unfortunately I only have the one!  As you can see it was very light fog here, for which we were thankful for after seeing the dense wall of fog over the river…

rolling…

On the drive to and from Florida one of the areas I enjoy driving through is around Lexington, Kentucky.   I love the farms/ranches and the rolling hills in that area of the state.  Even on a dreary day it is lovely to see…

skinny buildings…

Every year when I go through Cincinnati I wonder about the ‘skinny buildings’…I’ve done some research trying to find out why the tall thin buildings?  What I found was reference to their historical aspect but nothing with detailed information about this particular architecture preference.   I’m going to assume when these buildings were built the roads were narrow,  with possibly a large influx of settlers, with space being limited?   If anyone knows the reason please leave a message…fyi…photo taken while driving, not me of course!

Chief Commanda I

I’ve posted photos of the Chief Commanda previously…it was launched in 1946, and served Lake Nipissing until 1975 when it was replaced by Cheif Commanda II.  Chief I is now a restaurant on the waterfront.

where is spring?

How has your spring been so far?  Ours hasn’t arrived yet…check out our snow banks!   As I am writing this it is snowing, in the morning the temperature is supposed to be -26F or -14C with the wind chill!   …could be worse right?

bowing to the ground…

I never get tired of looking at these trees…they amaze me, their root system must reach a great distance.  We have very strong winds in this area and I’m always expecting to drive by and find one or more of these old fellows toppled over.  This photo was taken a few weeks before Christmas…

“freezing fog”…

Photo was taken from my back deck(gray-scale)…it is somewhat foggy outside…which is creating “freezing fog”…http://www.theweatherprediction.com/habyhints/359/    As you can see, the needles on this tree are weighted down…

strange season…

The majority of snow is gone…for now… but we are left with ice build up along the shore line…this has been such a strange fall weather wise. I know we aren’t the only place to experience such unusual weather patterns, just stating a fact.   This was taken around 4:30pm yesterday…it was foggy over the water but not so much over the land, made for interesting photos.

ice.lake.nipissing.nov. 2014

ice.lake.nipissing.3.nov. 2014This ice build did not melt and will make for difficult walking and snowmobiling once we get more snow, but is something that is beyond our control and happens often as the winds are strong off the lake…

old is new again…

I’ve not taken any photos for a couple of weeks now, which is why I’ve been posting photos I’ve taken in the last year or so…here are three more.

snowy day…

We got up to a snowy day on Saturday…wasn’t supposed to be but “surprise”!   It was snowing and blowing on and off all day.

Did I mention it was darn cold a well?  This street is one over from Lake Nipissing…couldn’t get to the public access anymore as the snowbanks are too high!

This coming week is supposed to get colder again!   Both these photos are color but with the blowing snow they almost look B & W.

bitterly cold wind…

when I went for a walk to day it was overcast, lightly snowing with a bitterly cold north wind…I captured a few photos at one of the access.   the white you see in the distance isn’t waves, it is chunks of ice forming in the water…the wind chill factor dropped the temperature cold enough ice is forming in chunks.

abandoned?

more fall colors, more yellow/gold in this area…this was taken on my way to Sudbury, which is about an hour and a half west of North Bay…building.road.2013

Trout Lake…

For those of you who don’t know North Bay is fortunate to be surrounded by two awesome lakes…Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake…the latter is the much smaller lake of the two, (7 miles long 2miles wide)approximately 4 miles east of Lake Nipissing, but beautiful none the less.   Trout Lake is the source of North Bay’s drinking water…
This photo was taken of the shoreline of Trout Lake, to show the fall colors.

weed? it is a herb!

I saw this the other day during my fall color tour…don’t know what it is but thought it pretty.  I started out with a cropped version of this but then changed my mind…the full view is more interesting…I’ll do a crop another time.

weed.2013FYI...a friend to mine passed along the info it is a herb called Tansy…you can find out more info about it here…  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tansy    The tiny heads are yellow before they are dried…I did a search and found info and photos of it and realized I’m used to seeing the herb before it is dried…it looks different once dried…

fall has arrived…

the trees are changing color very quickly so I decided to go for a bit of a drive to get a few photos yesterday…as you can see it was a dull dreary day…I’m hoping to go again tomorrow…I love the vibrant colors…I just don’t  like what comes after fall!fall.colors.cemetary.road.c..2013

bird on a lamp post…

I was trying to take a photo of a  sunrise through the trees when I spotted this fellow…the sunrise isn’t worth posting, but I thought this the bird would be.   I don’t usually do this kind of thing to my photos but felt this photo was worthy…black & white and then in Picasa tried Holga-ish…

angry clouds…

I have to admit I’ve a major weakness for dark, moody, angry looking clouds…I don’t want any storm to accompany them, I only want to watch the clouds.  I stopped along the waterfront earlier today as we had such clouds rolling around in the sky, no storm, just fabulous clouds!  It is amazing to watch them change before your very eyes…mesmerizing!   I’ve not done anything to these photos…this is how the clouds looked…I may try HDR, on these photos another day… for for now this is it.

Cincinnati on the fly…

here are a few more photos of my drive home from Florida in March of this year…again all were taken from the passenger window as we drove…this is leaving Kentucky, heading into Cincinnati Ohio…towards the Brent Spence Bridge…I cropped out all the vehicles ahead of us not sure it was a good idea?

I’ve always wondered about these skinny houses in Cincinnati and why they were built this way…this is the first shot I’ve been able to do anything with…I’ve searched the internet but couldn’t find any info on the skinny houses…if anyone can tell me where I can read the history on these houses let me know…

drive bys….

When driving to and from Florida I would snap shots along I75…most are terrible, but everyone so often I see one that has merit, with a little help of course. These were taken this past March on the way home in Kentucky…
kentucky.3.2013this one from a distance looks like the moss you see in Florida…not sure if it is though…it is a bit blurry, but thought it was interesting none the less.

holding on…

this tree is in my front yard and I noticed last winter the stately old fellow holds on to it’s leaves for as long as it can!   Here it is January 4th., and he still has many flapping in the wind…as you can see a bit of a gloomy day…
