selective cutting…
This post is all about trees…I love trees, they make the neighborhoods colorful, they attract birds, provide shade, in some cases privacy, short ones tall ones, I love the look of trees, especially in the fall when the leaves have dropped. The neighborhoods with out trees look rather barren to me…having said that I do understand the logic in pruning, cutting back large branches or even cutting the tree down when necessary. The reason I’m talking about this is North Bay Hydro, our local hydro company, pays a local company in town to do this so no branches are closer than 9 meters (29.5ft) to a hydro line…my surrounding neighborhood was chosen this fall to have this done…while I understand the logic of why it must be done, it saddens me to see how spindly some of the trees now look. Many of the large stately deciduous trees are fine as only a few branches have been taken but for some trees, in particular the coniferous trees, the whole side facing the wire is gone! The clump of trees in the center of this photo looks fine…it is large enough to handle a few limbs cut, but check out the tree to the right…
on the tree below, all the branches below the wire are in tact, so it is much like the tree on the right above…half a tree from the wire up!
it is difficult to tell in the tree below, but when the leaves are in full bloom they will be to the left of the cutting, the other branches are from another tree…
again, all the branches are gone on the one side of the tree…

Very cool of them to give a trim to preserve the tree instead of taking them down 🙂

on one hand it is Andy on the other it is a sore sight to see…because these trees are on peoples property that I don’t know I couldn’t take the photos from the side…that is how you would have been able to see the effect of this selective cutting…not pretty really 😦

I guess not 😦 I’ve seen entire hedges here chopped here as well, I guess it’s a balance between precision and as you say eyesore huh?

So sad that the trees have to be pruned like this, Heather. Those pesky power lines are such a blight on the landscape. 😦

It is AD…because these trees are on peoples property I don’t know, I didn’t feel comfortable taking the photos from the side, the dramatic appearance is visible from the side, not so much from the front! I completely understand the logic as putting the power lines underground would be too costly at this point and time, so they do what works best with the least cost for Hydro… 🙂

I agree – I see the logic in it but the end result is sad. Trees no longer look natural and the beauty suffers because the lines are not underground.

Heather, it is sad to see trees disfigured like this – but I know safety is important too. I really appreciate big old trees that have been given room to grow.

I agree Wendy…it is what it is…has to happen, just makes me wish there was another way, even though I know there isn’t! I love the grand old trees, the ones that are gnarly and crooked…they have such awesome character…

I see a lot of this and sometimes the tree trimmers get very creative. At least they leave the trees 🙂
